What is Milk Glass
Milk glass is a popular milky-coloured glass used to make a variety of decorative items such as vases, cake stands, plates, compotes and more. Commonly seen in white and characterised by a creamy, thick, milk-like appearance, it also comes in colours such as pink, blue, green and yellow to name a few.
History of Milk Glass
Milk glass originated in Venice in the 16th century, where it was manufactured in a variety of colours such as yellow, brown, black, pink and blue, all with a milky hue. The name "Milk Glass" however did not come in to use until relatively recently.
Milk glass became popular in France during the end of the 19th century, and was often considered to be a sign of upperclass prosperity. During the early 20th century, also known as the American Gilded Age, milk glass was once again a sign of wealth and fortune, and the pieces produced during this time are considered to be of exceptional quality.
Today, milk glass is still highly collectable due to its timeless elegance and appeal. Many of the iconic designs manufactured by firms such as Fenton (with their most notable hobnail design), Westmoreland and Jeanette Glass Company are still some of the most popular items sought after today. While milk glass is still being produced by a small number of manufacturers in the US, many of the most collectable and ornate designs are unfortunately no longer in production. It is these highly precious, rare pieces of history that Petite Portions is now bringing to you.
